Hi, how are you?! Welcome to Theology Today, a new blog bringing you the latest news, ideas and opinions in theology.
Now I know what you're thinking - "theology?! I don't think so!!" It's fair to say that theology isn't the most fashionable subject in the world today. Many people don't even know it exists as a subject, let alone take an interest in it. Why, you might be asking, would I care about ideas about God? Why would the study of religion, philosophy and ethics interest me in the slightest?!
Well let me tell you why! We might not realise it, but theology and philosophy is everywhere. And I mean everywhere! When we are making decisions about what we do everyday, we're making moral and ethical decisions. When we think about what makes us happy and what we believe in and why, we are engaging in philosophical discussions and debates. Religion is an essential part of international politics, and for many people worship of God is central to their daily lives. Many countries around our world are run as theocracies, with Religious laws the law of the land.
At the core of theology are the central questions of belief, existence, meaning and ethics. How is God involved in the world today? What should teach our children? Is euthanasia always wrong? What moral standards should be kept in a family? Is there any explanation for evil? How should we read Holy texts? What is my vocation in life?
Many of us see theology as something abstract or something from the history books. We see it as practised by those who are devoutly religious, we believe you have to believe all sorts of weird and wonderful Biblical teachings in order to consider these big theological questions.
But this couldn't be further from the truth. Theology is a subject for ALL of us to study. It is alive, it is active, and it couldn't be more important than it is today. By asking these questions - and by considering the answers offered - we can grow not only as individuals, but also as a society.
Here on Theology Today, we will be exploring the face of theology...TODAY. That means what's happening in the news, what questions are being asked today, and the implications of all of this for our lives in the 21st century.
If you're looking for the latest developments on faith, philosophy, ethics and morality, look no further. This it Theology Today, where we tackle the questions of theology today.
